Each print is made directly from the original digital image by me up to 17"x22". I personally carry out all facets involved in the creation of my work to safeguard quality and integrity. I utilize digital SLR formats, process electronically using traditional chemical darkroom techniques such as dodging, burning and color correction, and print in my studio with archival inks on archival papers. I do not use assistants.
I’ve always been a creator. I liked being able to find a personal beauty in odd or simple things. The satisfaction that comes from seeing with an open mind is personal and stems from never losing touch with my childhood creativity. I treasure that.
Painting was my first love but photography stole my passion. Sadly, even with a degree in art, I moved away from most of my personal artistic work after the grind of daily adult life set in. Still, God sometimes has a way of moving in our lives that can turn any tragedy into a real-life miracle. Had I never been diagnosed with cancer, I may never have begun the personal journey of rediscovering all those things about art that I love.
Today, I work solely with digital SLR but one day I hope to be able to pursue digital medium format. I think for those of us who learned photography the “traditional” way with film and darkroom chemicals, we have been fortunate to experience both the best of a vanishing process and the birth of a new era. Playing and experimenting with this new technology is a wonderful and fun process that is invigorating.
In this artistic journey, I’ve learned that life, like the conditions that make up a single photographic shot, is fleeting and ever-changing. Though I can only capture a moment in time with each snap of the shutter, I hope that somehow, through my photographs, my spirit and perspective of God’s great creation will live on. It is with great joy and hope that I anticipate my footprint on this earth being one of lasting beauty and value.
